The future of the EU: Strategic Agenda 2019-2024

agenda

On 20-21 of June in Brussels European leaders adopted the new Strategic Agenda for 2019-2024. The European Council agreed on an agenda for the EU for the next five years that sets out priority areas that will steer the work of the European Council and provide guidance for the work programmes of other EU institutions. The strategic agenda focuses on four main priorities:

  • protecting citizens and freedoms
  • developing a strong and vibrant economic base
  • building a climate-neutral, green, fair and social Europe
  • promoting European interests and values on the global stage

In the next five years, the EU institutions will be working on a number of policy initiatives as well as funding programs to support on-going and new initiatives. The new Commission will be facing a series of challenges in areas such as how to improve and further leverage the Single Market, digitization, boosting industry and supporting SMEs, trade, migration policy, security and defense as well as the impacts of Brexit. As expected, the priority areas and challenges will influence future funding trends in key sectors Schuman Associates is closely following such as digitalization, Research and Development, energy and the support towards the EU's green transition to mention a few. The EU will continue to support and cooperate with neighboring countries and to provide funding and assistance to third countries through its external aid programs. Finally, there will also be a strong focus on protecting EU values and improving the overall quality of life of EU citizens by ensuring no-one is left behind and fundamental rights and equality are assured.

Next steps

In the coming days the EU leaders will discuss the nomination of the new heads of the EU institutions. The next summit will be on 30th of June. Following the meeting, the president of the European Council will consult with the European Parliament on a possible candidate for the presidency of the Commission.
